I usually have the best of intentions of creating an outline...but it never works out that I actually use it.  Even in college I would create an outline but end up flying by the seat of my pants.  I always had in mind certain facts/or incidents I'd like to use...and would always work them in.  I found I would work myself backwards in an outline...instead of forwards into one.

I have read a few books that the cover didn't convey the story at all, which left me feeling let down in several ways. I'm a visual person so when I see a book cover, I can get drawn into the story before I even start reading! 

As someone who is more of the artistic ability than the creative writing ability I'm curious....what do you want in your cover-art?  I've read about authors who have nearly no say in their cover art (and we are talking huge authors) down to authors who create their own.  Are you artistically creative when it comes to your cover art or are you someone who needs something created for them?  As an artist myself I love working WITH an author to make their vision come to life.  It's a pet peeve of mine to see artwork for a book cover that has nothing whatsoever to do with the contents.  Oh!  A special peeve of mine is when the characters on the cover don't match the characters in the book!  Does that bother anyone else?  As a graphic artist I strive to make the author's vision come to life...come on, be honest, what are your thoughts?  Attached is a copy of a cove I did for a book called "Going To California"...tell me your thoughts.  Does the cove convey the title?  Would you do something different?

I suppose someone must go first, I will bravely throw myself on that grenade!   My name is Anita, I will be one of the Admin/Moderators on this forum (so everyone play nice).  Am I a writer?  Not really, I do dabble.  I do have some stories vying for space in my head but since I fail to sit down and actually write, I wouldn't feel right calling myself a writer.  I support friends of mine who write, I create cover art and yes...I admit it, I am a uber-geek as well...and while I am a highly creative person sitting down to write is something I fail to do.I find it frustrating honestly that I do have these stories in my head, I hear the characters tap-tap-tapping at my cranium begging for attention, I just cannot seem to sit down (without a 10 yr old continually distracting me or a husband wanting to chat at the most inopportune times) to write and let my thoughts flow.  I know I'm not alone with this issue either; so tell me...how do those of you who successfully manage to scribe words regularly do it?  I am in complete and total awe of anyone who can seem to do that.  I tip my hat to you all!  Happy writing...talk to each of you soon!  Here's one of the covers I created...it's a great read too!

I don't use an outline per se, but usually have several things that I'd like to see in the story as I write. The closest thing I can call my outline style is "Fly by the Seat of My Pants," but it also bears a slight similarity to the Snowflake Method.Does anyone else wing it while writing, or it is outlines all the way?
